Orange shirt day takes place on September 30th every year. The purpose of this day is to remember those who are affected by the Government of Canada's Residential School system.
These schools were run by priests and nuns from a variety of Christian faiths. The first schools opened in 1880 and the last school was closed in 1996. They were put in place to assimilate the indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. Click this link to view a slideshow about Orange Shirt Day. |
